Hariko is a traditional form of Japanese papier-mâché, long used to create lightweight folk toys and auspicious objects. Kyoto Karasuma Rokushichido gives the tradition a playful contemporary character, shaping familiar symbols of Japan, from Mount Fuji and daruma to cats, fish, and birds, with colourful washi details and the gentle irregularities of handwork.
Open the bottom to discover an omikuji, a Japanese fortune slip blessed at Manzoku Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Once the fortune has been drawn, the little hariko remains as a charming keepsake, bringing a small piece of Japanese tradition into the everyday corners of the home.
