Kaga Mizuhiki Lucky Envelope Set – Horse
Description
A little golden horse gallops across this delicate paper envelope, its flowing mane and outstretched legs formed from intricately arranged mizuhiki cords. The lively figure brings a playful spirit to a traditional Japanese way of giving.
In Japan, small envelopes known as pochibukuro are used to present money or small tokens of appreciation. Created for the Year of the Horse in 2026, this one makes even a modest gift feel thoughtful and celebratory, with a beautiful piece of Japanese craftsmanship to remember it by.
Features
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese decorative cord made from twisted paper, used for centuries in ceremonial gift wrapping. Around a century ago, Sokichi Tsuda transformed the craft in Kanazawa by developing three-dimensional forms from what had previously been largely flat arrangements. This distinctive approach became known as Kaga Mizuhiki.
The horse is formed from fine golden mizuhiki cords, carefully bent, looped and intertwined to suggest movement. Its raised head, flowing mane and extended legs emerge from the arrangement of the cords themselves, demonstrating how intricate forms can be created from a seemingly simple material.
Known as a pochibukuro in Japan, this small envelope is traditionally used to give money during New Year celebrations or other meaningful occasions. It can hold coins or folded banknotes, making the act of giving feel more personal.
