DESCRIPTION

This pitcher holds a small winter landscape. The lower half is soft, snowy white; above it, a band of pale blue-green glass rises like a cold, misty sky, and between the two drifts a ragged edge of darker texture, like the line where a frozen field meets the hills. Fine crackle runs through the upper band like wind across the slopes.

A gently pinched spout makes it easy to pour. Pair it with the matching cups for an evening of chilled sake by the window.

Features

Daisaku Hashimura is known for crackled glass that moves away from smooth transparency, using a careful process of cooling and reheating to break up the surface into textures like ice or lace. Here that texture is layered over opaque white, so the landscape changes as light passes through the upper band.

Each piece is hand-blown at Glass Studio 206, the studio Hashimura runs with his wife, glass artist Nomichi Hashimura, in Kamakura. Because every piece is made by hand, the pattern of the crackle is different on each.
