Blue & White Cup – Ridge
Snow-white below, pale blue above, and across the middle a dark, ragged ridge, like a line of mountains seen from far across a snowfield as the light fades. Fine crackle lines drift through the blue like wind over the hills.
The rim flares gently outward, so the cup sits softly at the lips. Pour a little chilled sake and the landscape seems to deepen.
Features
Daisaku Hashimura is known for crackled glass that moves away from smooth transparency, using a careful process of cooling and reheating to break up the surface into textures like ice or lace. Here that texture is layered over opaque white, so the scene changes as light passes through the upper band.
Each piece is hand-blown at Glass Studio 206, the studio Hashimura runs with his wife, glass artist Nomichi Hashimura, in Kamakura. This is a one-of-a-kind cup; the line of the ridge is not repeated on any other.
