Colour Made from Glass
The animals and surrounding patches of colour are not painted onto a finished plate. Different coloured glasses form the composition itself, allowing colour, image and material to become part of the same surface.
Composed Piece by Piece
Ishizuka works with glass grains, powders and individually prepared pieces, arranging them much like a patchwork before firing. Cutting, combining and returning the glass to the kiln allows the small scenes to gradually take shape.
No Two Exactly Alike
The kiln introduces tiny bubbles, subtle shifts in colour and slight variations in the way the glass settles. Rather than removing these traces of the process, they become part of the soft, handmade character of each plate.
