Small Glass Plate – Bird
A white bird glides across a pale, frosted sky. Below the horizon the plate opens into two fields. One is clear glass filled with tiny bubbles, like a night meadow under falling snow, with a small white flower blooming at its edge. The other glows a warm honey gold, as if the last of the evening sun has settled there.
Small enough for a favourite sweet, or simply to enjoy on its own, it brings a little scene of colour and character to the table.
Features
The animals and surrounding patches of colour are not painted onto a finished plate. Different coloured glasses form the composition itself, allowing colour, image and material to become part of the same surface.
Ishizuka works with glass grains, powders and individually prepared pieces, arranging them much like a patchwork before firing. Cutting, combining and returning the glass to the kiln allows the small scenes to gradually take shape.
The kiln introduces tiny bubbles, subtle shifts in colour and slight variations in the way the glass settles. Rather than removing these traces of the process, they become part of the soft, handmade character of each plate.
