Bird Sake Glass

The Image Is Made of Glass
The bird, branch and surrounding colours are not simply painted onto the surface. Ishizuka works with different coloured glasses, arranging them into the composition before they are fused together through kiln firing. What appears almost like an illustration is built into the glass itself.
Built Through the Kiln
Rather than shaping the piece in a single moment, Ishizuka works through a slower kiln-forming process. Glass is prepared in different forms, composed, cut and fired through multiple stages as the image and vessel gradually come together.
A Softer Side of Glass
Ishizuka’s work moves away from the sharp clarity often associated with glass. Frosted colour, tiny bubbles and softened forms give the material an almost powdery, gentle appearance, while transmitted light continues to change what can be seen within it.
