Paper Incense - Black (Sleep)
Black No. 03 Sleep is a blend for the end of a long day. Lavender calms the nerves and cedar brings a sense of peace, with a soft base of patchouli.
Unlike the original collection, which captures a single fragrance in each leaf, the Black series blends essential oils with a purpose: to relax, to focus, or to sleep.
HA KO takes its name from the Japanese ha (leaf) and kō (incense). It is made by Kunjudo, an incense house founded in 1893 on Awaji Island, where Japan's history of incense is said to begin. Each leaf is shaped by hand from washi paper using Kunjudo's patented method, right down to its veins and stem.
Set it in a small dish and it works as potpourri, scenting a shelf or entryway for around three months. Light the tip and it becomes incense, smouldering for five to seven minutes.
Features
The paper smoulders slowly and evenly, keeping the shape of the leaf as it turns to ash rather than crumbling apart.
Each scent has its own leaf shape and colour, so a few laid out together read like a small collection of fallen leaves. HA KO received a Good Design Award in 2019.

Light the tip of a leaf, blow out the flame and rest it on a felt burner mat (sold separately) set on a heat-proof plate or surface. Never leave it burning unattended, keep it away from drafts, children and anything flammable, and make sure it is fully out before discarding. Between uses, keep the leaves in their packaging and away from humidity to preserve the scent.
Please Note
Each leaf is formed and finished by hand, so shape and colour vary slightly from piece to piece.
