Coffee & Tea Saucer – Animal
A cloud-shaped clearing opens across this saucer, and the whole picture-book cast has gathered inside. The bear from the matching cup is mid-dance, a rabbit leaps past, and a little pig peeks out from behind a rock. Bluebirds dart between the clouds, and a fruit tree stands beside a fallen acorn. Golden lattice fills the sky above and crackled turquoise rolls in below. Look closer and more faces are hiding at the edges: a rabbit, a bear and a pig peering in from the borders.
Features
Kawai takes the dense ornament of traditional Kutani ware and gives it room to breathe, scattering small animals across the white in his light, illustrative style. The scene is framed in golden yellow lattice and crackled turquoise glaze.
