Plum Blossom Mizuhiki Chopstick Rest
A single plum blossom, barely four centimetres across, tied from fine loops of mizuhiki cord. Set beside a bowl, it gives chopsticks somewhere to rest and the table a small note of celebration.
Plum is the first tree to flower at the end of a Japanese winter, and it has long been a sign of good beginnings. That makes these rests a natural fit for New Year and other festive meals, though they are just as easy to enjoy on an ordinary evening, or left on a shelf as a tiny ornament.
Features
Mizuhiki is a cord made from tightly twisted washi paper, traditionally tied around gifts to carry good wishes. Around a century ago in Kanazawa, Sokichi Tsuda, founder of Tsuda Mizuhiki Origata, began shaping these cords into three-dimensional forms, a style that became known as Kaga Mizuhiki. The workshop is now in its fifth generation.
This chopstick rest comes from knot, a line the studio launched in 2013 to bring its traditional tying techniques into everyday life. Each blossom is tied by hand, so the loops sit a little differently from piece to piece.
