"Mochitsuki" Nishikisai Rabbit, Small
Look up at the full moon in Japan and you may be told to find the rabbit: a figure many see in its markings, pounding rice into mochi with a mallet and mortar. Yakushigama’s little rabbit is hard at work on exactly that task, mortar at the ready. It is a gentle, good-humoured piece for an autumn windowsill, a shelf or a desk.
Features
Yakushigama is the kiln name of Chugai Toen, a ceramics studio in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, a city with a long history of pottery-making. Its ornaments draw on the Seto novelty tradition of finely made ceramic figures, with a modern Japanese sensibility.
The rabbit and mortar are finished in nishikisai, the brand’s colourful painted decoration, giving this small scene its bright, cheerful look.
