"Million Ryō" Sometsuke Nishiki Maneki Neko
Since the Edo period, the maneki neko has been welcomed into Japanese homes and shops as a charm that beckons good fortune and good company. This one from Yakushigama aims high. Its name, hyakuman ryō, means one million ryō, after the gold coins of the Edo period: a wish for prosperity on a rather grand scale. Set it by the door, on a desk or beside the till, and let it do its best.
Features
Yakushigama is the ornament brand of Chugai Toen, a pottery company in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, known for zodiac figures, beckoning cats and seasonal decorations with a modern Japanese sensibility.
This cat is decorated in the sometsuke nishiki style, which pairs blue underglaze painting with coloured overglaze decoration. At just 5 cm tall, it fits easily on a shelf or windowsill, and makes a small, cheerful gift for a new home, a new business or the New Year.
