Suyi 素伊

Suyi (素伊) is a ceramicist working in Jingdezhen, a city that has been making porcelain for more than a thousand years. She completed a master's degree at Jingdezhen Ceramic University in 2014, when the city was still known mostly for factory orders, well before it became the lively centre for handmade ceramics it is today.

After graduating, she worked mainly on commissions. Every client asked for something different in technique and style, and meeting those requests led her to try one approach after another, an openness that still shows in her work.

Her own designs return again and again to plants, drawing on classic botanical patterns such as four-leaf clover and snow willow, set against a warm beige palette. The colours are painted under the glaze, and the glaze itself is made with natural rutile, which gives the surface a soft, matte feel in the hand. Some pieces are finished with hand-painted gold.

Her Earth series is made for everyday use: a cup for a quiet hour on your own, or a few plates to set out when friends come round.

For us, Suyi's work shows how much a few gentle choices can carry. A muted palette, a botanical pattern drawn again and again, a matte glaze that feels soft in the hand: nothing about it is loud, yet each cup and plate brings a small, steady pleasure to the table. It is the kind of everyday ceramics we are glad to share.
