Wakobo Hoyou 和工房 包結

Wakobo Hoyou (和工房 包結) is a mizuhiki studio based in Kyoto, founded in 2007 by mizuhiki artist Eriko Morita (森田江里子). Its name joins two acts at the heart of Japanese gift-giving, hō, to wrap, and yū, to tie, and the studio's guiding wish is to share, from Kyoto, a way of living that treasures both.

Mizuhiki is decorative cord made from twisted, starched washi paper. For some 1,300 years it has accompanied gifts, celebrations and moments of remembrance in Japan, and during the Edo and Meiji periods the art of tying it spread from samurai households into everyday life. At Wakobo Hoyou, Morita and her team create everything from gift envelopes and small pochi-bukuro to seasonal decorations and accessories, while also researching and passing on the older forms of origata mizuhiki, the traditional folding and tying used in formal wrapping. Born in Tokyo, Morita studied fashion and calligraphy before turning to mizuhiki, and finds inspiration in patterns as far afield as Celtic knotwork.

Beyond its own work, the studio teaches mizuhiki through classes across Japan and online, and trains certified instructors. While keeping traditional techniques alive, it explores new designs that bring the changing seasons into modern life, with the hope of sharing the culture of mizuhiki with the world.

We love Wakobo Hoyou for the care it brings to the simplest gestures. A knot tied by hand turns an envelope into a message before it is even opened, a reminder that how we give can matter as much as what we give. It is a small, beautiful way to live with intention, rooted in Kyoto and easy to share wherever you are.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0985/2262/8372/collections/Japanese_Gift_Envelopes_with_Mizuhiki_Knots.png?v=1793466363
