While Kutani ware is traditionally celebrated for its bold, vibrant colors and intricate patterns, her work is defined by delicacy, warmth, and storytelling that brings a smile every time you pick up one of her pieces.

She works under the name Iroe Yu (色絵 遊), which translates to "Playful Overglaze Decoration," a nod to the traditional technique where colorful pigments are handpainted over fired glaze and then fired again at a lower temperature to set the vibrant hues. The character 遊 (yu), meaning "play," reflects her whimsical, joyful approach to her craft.

Her iconic motif is the Shima Enaga, or long-tailed tit. Affectionately known as the "snow fairy," this beloved bird is found only in Hokkaido. Her palette is vivid, with radiant indigo, purples and pink punctuated with delicate blue and gold accents. Run your finger across her pieces and you'll notice the painted areas have a subtle raised relief, giving the illustrations, especially the Shima Enaga, a three-dimensional, almost touchable quality that contrasts beautifully with the smooth white porcelain.

A tiny piece of the same garden, small enough to rest beside a bowl, bringing the snow fairies right to the edge of your plate.

Features

Painted in Odaka's Kutani overglaze, it pairs naturally with the rest of the series.

Specifications

Material: Porcelain (Kutani ware)

Dimensions: Ø 4.5 × H 1.5 cm

Weight: 35 g

Artist: Yuko Odaka

Handcrafted

Limited

Made in Japan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0985/2262/8372/files/a_c551aa22-0744-4d02-bf27-f2ef16a929da.jpg?v=1778545340
teacup-yunomi-1
Teacup

Hold this small teacup and a dense, colourful garden wraps around your hand, bright against white porcelain, with a snow fairy or two tucked among the blooms.

Features

Odaka works in the tradition of Kutani-yaki, hand-painting colourful pigments over the fired glaze and firing again at a lower temperature to set the colours.

Specifications

Material: Porcelain (Kutani ware)

Dimensions: Ø 8 × H 6.5 cm

Weight: 140 g

Artist: Yuko Odaka

Handcrafted

Limited

Made in Japan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0985/2262/8372/files/a_2ec48a58-8430-4607-b4e0-fd911ecbf546.jpg?v=1778545503
plate-round
Round Plate

A whole garden held in a circle: snow fairy birds flit among the flowers, their wings and the flower centres touched with gold-yellow that shimmers as the plate catches the light.

Features

Odaka's palette of radiant indigo, purple and pink, punctuated with blue and gold, gives her Kutani ware its delicate, joyful character.

Specifications

Material: Porcelain (Kutani ware)

Dimensions: Ø 16 × H 2.5 cm

Weight: 263 g

Artist: Yuko Odaka

Handcrafted

Limited

Made in Japan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0985/2262/8372/files/a_6ef38c18-bffe-4a77-8ccd-21b6cb22fbae.jpg?v=1778571339
plate-oval
Oval Plate

A long white plate with a garden hiding in it.
